1 Nephi:1 - 1 Nephi:10

We begin the book in Jerusalem where Nephi's father, Lehi, in a vision, learns of the coming destruction of Jerusalem. Lehi pleads for the people to repent of their evil ways, the people reject his message and threaten to kill him.
Lehi along with his wife and children are commanded to leave Jerusalem. After they depart God tells Lehi they must return to Jerusalem to retrieve the brass plates, which are in the possession of Laban. After a failed attempt, Nephi eventually slays Laban and gains possession of the Plates and returns to his family along with Laban's servant Zoram.

Wow, the first one to post again, what an honor. My favorite scripture in this section is 1 Nephi 3:7. It's the one where Nephi says, "I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded..." and he goes on to explain that the Lord doesn't give us a commandment save He provides a way for us to accomplish it. This reminds me that no matter how tempting something may appear, there is always a way for me to overcome the temptation! :D

As I read the beginning of the Book of Mormon (as I have so many times before), I was particularly struck by how sad it must have been for Lehi to have sons that were so wayward. Laman and Lemuel were so hard-hearted. Even though they had seen an angel and had received many "signs" that what Lehi and Nephi were teaching and living were true, they were still slow to understand and slow to live as they should. I guess this shows that signs mean nothing if there is not faith to begin with.

Mommy taught me about the story of the Tree of Life. She showed me pictures of the tree and the special fruit that was on it. I know that if I am good, I receive rewards (just like how if we hold to the rod, we will be able to be with Heavenly Father and Jesus). For example, last night I was a good girl and I ate dinner with mommy and daddy without whining for waffles. Daddy gave me chocolate milk as a reward for my good deed! I love being good.

It;s wonderful to see that the Dangerfields have made the corner and are in 1st Nephi. And yes Susan Lehi and Sariah had their hands full with their sons, an experience that is not limited to Lehi's time. Emma, you are learning so much, follow the lessons of your mommy and daddy and you too will gain great wisdom!
