  • From Susan!

    Dear scripture reading group,

Here is my synopsis for Helaman 11 - 3 Nephi 6. Once again, I took brief notes for each chapter as I read in regards to the points that stood out to me the most.

Hel 11: Nephi still has hope for the people - so he asked the Lord to give them a famine instead of war. This way they would not die by the sword, but possibly be stirred up unto remembrance of the Lord and how they should live. Nephi is a an example of a great missionary - loving those he serves and having a great desire and belief that they can change and live as God would have them.

Hel 12: The Lord chastens his people so that they will remember Him. Sometimes it takes things even as large as a famine or natural disaster for people to remember to turn to the Lord. We are nothing compared to Him - "O how great is the nothingness of men" (v. 7). We need Heavenly Father and Jesus to have everlasting life and return to Them.

Hel 13: It's interesting to see that a Lamanite (Samuel) is preaching to the Nephites to repent. It is sad to see that the Nephites who used to be so righteous are now becoming so wicked.

Hel 14: Samuel preaches to the Nephites regarding many signs- of Christ's birth and his death. These signs include a new star, darkness for 3 days, thunderings and lightnings, the earth trembling, and graves opening.

Hel 15: The Lord really chastens the Nephites in this chapter. He reminds them of the great works and blessings they have received. He also emphasizes that the Lamanites are much more righteous than them and that the Lamanites changed their ways because of the preaching of the Nephites. Now the Lamanites "fear to sin" (v. 9) and the Nephites, who have been the Lord's "chosen people" (v. 3) have become wickeed and strayed far off the path.

Hel 16: Signs begin to occur and the words of the prophets and the scriptures begin to be fulfilled. Many, however, do not believe in the signs and reason to believe they are just coincidences and good guesses. They sadly convince themselves that the marvelous signs to come are only foolish traditions.

3 Nep 1: It is strange that even as such marvelous signs are taking place, wickedness increases. Also, many people begin to fear their destruction as they realize that the prophets had spoken the truth. It reminds me of the quote that "if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear".

3 Nep 2: Even though only about 5 years had passed since the signs of Christ's birth appeared, the people began to forget the signs and started to convince themselves that they were not as miraculous as they may have once believed.

3 Nep 3: The Nephites and Lamanites unite to battle against the growing Gadianton robbers. Lachoneous is a righteous leader for the Nephites as well as Gidgiddoni - Lachoneus impresses upon the people to repent or they will not be able to overcome the robbers.

3 Nep 4: The Nephites defeat the Gadianton robbers. They sing praises to God for helping them defeat their enemies. It's relieving to see that they are recognizing the source of their strength.

3 Nep 5: I was particularly impressed with the Nephites as they provided their prisoners a means to forgiveness and release from prison. Those who were imprisoned were preached to and if they repented and covenented with God, they were set free. Those who did not, were punished according to the law. I thought that this system showed true equity and justice.

3 Nep 6: Because of the Nephites righteousness, they began to prosper in the land. But, as seen many times before, their prosperity led them to be prideful, and boastful in their riches - this, in turn, began to lead to wickedness and dissentions in the church.

  • This is from Sarah, her first post, welcome to the challenge!

Okay so I'm going to be a lazy bum and make a short but sweet summary of Helaman 1-10 (yes, I'm a little behind, hehe)

Okay so the Nephites all go eeeevil (no thanks to the Gadianton dudes) and Nephi is all "you're eeeevil!" and he gets all sad so the people are all "aaaww Nephi is sad because we're stupid". Gandianton dudes are angry at Nephi, Nephi kicks some serious evil but by revealing the murderer of the big cheese. Nephi asks God for a famine to stop the people from going to war... Nephites repent The End!

    :D

    Hello again grandadoo!

This week I have observed my mom read her scriptures several times and have been read aloud to as well. In addition to my practice and familiarization with the scriptures, I have been working on my manners. I have been practicing how to say "please" when I want something. It was really hard at first, because my heart was hardened, much like the Nephites in this past week's reading, but I learned to humble myself in order to say please in a polite way to my mom or dad. I have learned that I can get things that I want much quicker and less painlessly, if I say polite words, instead of whining. Also, in nursery today we learned about saying sorry. I am still working on this; it is hard to say sorry when I have done something wrong, but I am sure that I will soon see the value of the word, just as I have learned the value of saying the word please.
In conclusion, this past week I have been doing the best that an Emma can do regarding reading scriptures and acting like Jesus would want me to.

    -Love, Emma

  • I might consider meeting your challenge if you can meet one in return. I challenge you to keep your office and work room tidy and clean from now on.
Since it hasn't happened in 25 years, I expect I won't be given any incentive to join your Book of Mormon challenge.

  • Well, I really enjoyed Helaman 13 in this section. It's the story about Samuel preaching to the Nephites... I enjoyed it mainly because it talked about how all of our riches come from our Heavenly Father and how we often don't realize that and we don't thank Him enough for all that He gives us. (Helaman 13:22)

  • Again this is Aaron and not Dadoo.

I really really like this section. I love it when Helaman preaches about how they rejected the prophets. Good stuff. I like prophets. They make me happy!!!
