3 Nephi:7 - 3 Nephi:19

These chapters contain choice moments of the Book of Mormon, including an expanding disparity between the righteous and the wicked, as many of the faithful fall to the temptations of the evil one:

3 Nephi 7:8

"And thus six years had not passed away since the more part of the people had turned from their righteousness, like the dog to his avomit, or like the sow to her wallowing in the mire."

Great destruction is followed by the glorious appearance of the Savior:

3 Nephi 9;15

"Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I acreated the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. bI am in the Father, and the Father in me; and in me hath the Father glorified his name."

Finally in chapters 17-19, Jesus teaches this people many truths including the essential ordinances of the sacrament and baptism.

We await your comments, questions and explanations, those that complete 3 Nephi 19 will receive a Dadoo Bonus!

  • For once, I thought I would actually provide a more brief summary of the happenings within the assigned reading, instead of a novel explaining each individual chapter. So, here goes:

Many people who had always scoffed and were disbelieving regarding the signs and teachings of the prophets are proven wrong as many miraculous signs come to pass. Many are regretful and mourn at their dismal choices and way of life. I learned in the first couple of chapters that we should not procrastinate our repentence! It is amazing to read the account of Christ's coming to the people in the Americas. I appreciate how straightforward and to the point Christ words to the people are. He explains of the destructions that have occured, and why, and that those that repent and come unto Him will be forgiven. Christ goes on to teach the people about Christlike living and ordinances... regarding prayer, taking care of those that are in need, sacrament, the Holy Ghost, and much more. It is refreshing to learn once again about these basic foundations of the gospel, as taught by the Lord.

  • Hello once again grandadoo...

I have had a good week. I am big girl now, sleeping in a big girl bed. I have been learning quickly how to be obedient to my mommy and daddy and stay in the bed when it is time to sleep, even though I could easily escape. My mommy and daddy are proud of me and my good choices! This week in nursery I colored a sun and learned that I can be a sunbeam to those around me... this means that I can be a good example to others, by not taking others kids' toys, or yelling when I should be reverent. Today in Sacrament Meeting, I didn't stand up on the bench and distract the people behind me, but sat down and ate a snack, read books, and played with daddy's tie. I was sure to be reverent and fold my arms during all of the prayers. I observed mommy reading her Book of Mormon this week. She likes to read the scriptures because it helps me a better mommy. I am grateful for that!

  • 3 Nephi 7-19

Your story begins in a time when your people the Nephites are going through a tumultuous period. The chief judge is murdered, the government is overthrown, and your people divide into tribes, every man with his family and friends. Your best friend in the world, Zeronus, approaches you and tells you about this wonderful new leader among men he has met who is proposing a government where you could be powerful and rich with little effort. It sounds very tempting as you have often dreamt of a life of leisure and easy women. However, you recently went to a meeting where a man, Nephi, who claims to be a prophet, said some stuff about being good to your fellow man and following the sacred writings. Normally you would just blow him and all that goody-too-shoes crap off, but something in the meeting really touched you. Do you follow your friend Zeronus (Continue to paragraph A1)? Or do you seek out the prophet Nephi (Continue to paragraph B1)?

A1- Zeronus leads you to meet Jacob, the self proclaimed king of his band of tribes. He is a very charismatic man, as well as very wealthy. He sees you as a promising young apprentice, and he offers to make you a leader of a small group of people if you will follow his orders in whatever he says. His first mission for you is to murder a good man, a man some call a saint, who is in his way. With the money and power swimming before your eyes you whole heartedly agree. You accomplish your mission with the help of your tribe with secret oaths never to tell anyone. (Continue to paragraph A2)

B1 – You leave your friend Zeronus to find the location where Nephi and those who follow him live and worship. You are impressed with the way they are so nice to each other and seem to be so organized. You feel something within you that makes you want to be like them and have that happiness. You find Nephi and he explains to you about repentance and baptism. You spend a sleepless night that night thinking about everything you had seen and heard. You decide to try to pray to see if what you heard is true. You have never prayed before, but you decide it is worth an attempt. As you pray you feel something swell within you, causing you to want to do everything that God wants you to do and to stop being bad. As you arise from your prayer you see it is morning. You rush out of your house to find Nephi and to beg him to be baptized and allowed to join their church. He of course agrees. (Continue to paragraph B2)

A2 – Jacob is pleased with what you have done. He is so impressed that he lets you in on his secret plan to leave Zarahemla and form a nation of his own until it is strong enough to overcome the Nephites. He enlists you in this endeavor. You of course follow willingly to have the chance to rise in his organization. The plan is set and the day arrives. You and all of Jacobs followers sneak out of town before anybody can do anything about it. You arrive in the far north and build a new city Jacobugath where you can follow your wicked desires. There you build a house and take up your place as one of Jacobs flunkies. (Continue to paragraph A3)

B2 – You continue learning more and more everyday about the Gospel and the Lord Jesus Christ. You find yourself yearning to be better, to be more righteous, to be more willing to sacrifice all for your faith. You leave all your former friends and wicked ways to become a full member of your new faith. Each day brings more challenges and more joy to your soul. (Continue to paragraph B3)

A3 – Suddenly one previously clear day a large storm inexplicably appears. It is very frightening, and completely abnormal and unexpected. The sky turns grey, torrents of dust and debris fly through the air, and you huddle deep within the recesses of your new house. Abruptly, your house becomes suddenly bright in a flash and a clap of thunder shakes your house to its very foundation. It sounds like it must have been awfully close. It happens again, and then again. You get up to peak out of your window. You find a nightmarish image of fire burning near by, you can hear distant shrilly screaming that makes your blood run cold. For an instant you wonder if you should run to help, but you could care less for those people. Your safety is really all that matters. Suddenly you see another flash with a deafening bang that knocks you off your feet. The lighting you see has blown through your rough, lighting it ablaze. You realize that you are trapped under a large ceiling beam that is viciously cutting into the bones in your legs. You realize with horror that you are trapped and your house is burning down around you. As the pain sears through your body you can smell the acrid smell of your own burning flesh. The pain is unbearable. You feel your mind fading, until suddenly you feel nothing.

B3 – Suddenly one previously clear day a large storm inexplicably appears. It is very frightening; however Nephi and another disciple had warned you that a day like this would be coming soon since it had been 33 years since the prophecy of the birth of Christ. You, like the other saints, had spent your time preparing for such a day. As you witness the horror of the land Bountiful burning around you, you have faith that the Lord will preserve you according to his matchless compassion as he had promised through his holy prophets. A thick, musty darkness covers the entire face of the land for three days. You try lighting candles and fires, but it is impossible. After many hours of trepidation and sadness over your own fate and the fate of your more wicked friends, you suddenly here a voice cry from the heavens in languished tone proclaiming great sadness for the deeds that had to have occurred due to the wickedness of the people. The voice explains that He is Jesus Christ and He is the light and life of the world. He announces that the Law of Moses is fulfilled in Him and invites all to repent and be saved. As the darkness lifts you begin to converse with your fellow disciples about the amazing developments as you congregate around the temple. Quietly inside of you, as if it was piercing you to your very core, you hear a voice (or feel it, you’re not sure). You can’t seem to understand it, but it makes your heart burn. You hear it again with the same result. The third time you really try to understand, opening your ears and your heart, as you try to find the soured with your eyes. You realize that it says, “Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name – Hear ye Him.” AS you look into the Heavens you see what appears to be a Man descending slowly like nothing you have ever seen before. He lands in the middle of your group, and you think to yourself with a gaping jaw that it must be an angel. He stretches His hand towards you and says “Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified should come into the world.” The next days and weeks are a glorious blur as you learn directly from the lips of the Savior and see miracle upon miracle. Nothing similar in any age had ever occurred. The greatness of it you could never fully describe. But you know in your heart that you are home, that this is where you want to be for eternity. In His presence.

  • Oh my goodness! 3 Nephi 13:19-21 are some of my most favoritest scriptures of all time! It always reminds me that I should focus on eternal gifts rather than temporal things, and when I focus on eternity everything else falls into place.

  • Kinda like the young boy who assembles a difficult puzzle which happens to a picture of the Savior on the reverse side. When he concentrated on Jesus the difficult side just fell into place!

And for that Annie receives a Coscto gift card, hurray for Annie!

I love these chapters. Certainly the peak of the Book of Mormon. These chapters make me happy. I enjoy them very much. Most inspiring indeed.
